I strongly disagree. They should go virtual through mid January when omicron is expected to peak and then subside. There simply are not enough tests or lab capacity to do this right. Two weeks of virtual is small price to pay. I worry about the unboosted kids whose immunity has waned from vaccination more than 6 months ago. I worry about the teachers — a lot. If we lose even one teacher by returning January 4 vs. January 17, it will not have been worth it. I hope Sidwell makes the right decision.
Speaking as a teacher, you are much more likely to lose me if I’m forced to teach virtually until mid-January or later. I am done teaching virtually and pretending my students can learn that way. We would need a day to prepare and distribute materials and technology and then waste another couple of days getting students familiar with learning online again, or what passes for learning. It’s a waste of time unless it’s truly the only option available and better than nothing. That’s not the case here. Keep school open and let me do my job.
Thank you. I hope you’re one of my kids’ teachers!
