Seems that the countries who have been most successful at controlling are the ones that have enforced lockdowns. We sadly don’t have the political will here to do true lockdowns, but we can at least close potential spreader nodes.

DP and not a Trumper but we also attend one of the schools listed here and travelled to a significant international tourism destination over break. We have taken multiple home antigen tests since returning that were negative and our school will require PCR testing before we return. This is not a reason to close schools and I am not sure why that is an issue or concern for you?

Speaking as a teacher, you are much more likely to lose me if I’m forced to teach virtually until mid-January or later. I am done teaching virtually and pretending my students can learn that way. We would need a day to prepare and distribute materials and technology and then waste another couple of days getting students familiar with learning online again, or what passes for learning. It’s a waste of time unless it’s truly the only option available and better than nothing. That’s not the case here. Keep school open and let me do my job.

As for HS, which is where the positivity rate "spiked" to a whopping 3% before break (and was only 2% when they shut it down), it's exams for 2 weeks.

Entirely possible to do that all in person . . . if necessary have 9/10 take exams in morning and 11/12 in afternoon (or vice versa), spread kids out in more rooms. And because it's one a day if there's some kid in advanced langauge/math/science they can take in other slot.
