Let me guess. Higher taxes soon because there are no more seats in our schools, amirite?
MCPS has 162,680 students. 1,200 unaccompanied minors is less than 1%. If there are no more seats it is hardly the fault of these kids.
Except thaat's in less than one year with no end in sight.. Multiply the problem by 10 years. Illegal immigration has been going on for decades in MoCo and it is already straining the county's resources. That's 1,200 more seats taxpayers have to pay for to educate foreign nationals from another country. Every dollar spent on another country's child is a dollar not spent on our own children.
Then maybe we should fix the immigration and refugee problem that leads to the children being unaccompanied so that their tax-paying, labor-providing parents come along, too. Seems like a win-win. In addition to not being terrible.
How many parents do you think we should take in? An unlimited number from around the world? Or, perhaps we should have some limits? Oh, wait! We do have limits. Which is why the US, and every other country in the world, has immigration rules. Unfortunately, some counties and cities have decided to flaunt those rules to protect undocumented immigrants by becoming sanctuary cities/counties.
I always get poo-poo’ed for this comment, but I worked for Montgomery county for 10+ years and they have so many free/super low cost ($10 per visit) health programs for “undocumented” women and children. It is unbelievably easy to register and qualify for these programs.
All taxpayer funded too. They never want to talk about how illegal immigration costs the county tons of money. They constantly spend huge amounts of schools on overcrowding. They want to completely upend our way of life wrt housing because we need more affordable homes. Well maybe we wouldn't have schools with overcrowding if the idiots in the county stopped taking in illegal immigrants and made it so easy for them to stay. Maybe we would have as bad of a supply problem for affordable housing if US citizens didn't have to compete with thousands of illegal immigrants for the same housing. Why should we upend our way of life and demolish our neighborhoods because foreign nationals from other countries come here illegally and strain our housing resources?
