And their only line of defense is XXX is not on the level of HYPSM because they said so. When you bring up facts supported with statistics, they'll resort to 1) calling the stats  incorrect/wrong/biased/outdated/non-inclusive/irrelevant/un-American or 2) ad hominem attacks or 3) bring up an irrelevant discussion to deflate the criticism

As long as any ranking is not about HYPSM being in the top 5, they'll disregard it. Any news that doesn't have HYPSM in it, they'll dismiss it as fake news. If someone made it big from a non-HYPSM school, they see it as an oddity because according to them, non-HYPSM grads are unworthy of success, even if you went to a T10 school or a non-HYP ivy, like Penn or Columbia. They can't live their life without a second not being obsessed over with that stupid, arbitrary acronym made up by prestige-obsessed parents on College Confidential.
