Land surveyors in the 1800s didn’t have a lot to go on and no way to really spread the word about dangerous natural areas of landscape. A forboding name is used many times to warn off trespassers.

On top of that the police was originally investigating whether not pockets of toxic gas had leeched out from underground caves in the area and killed them. A natural phenomenon which would have been attributed ‘religious’ significance when naming something ‘Devil’.[/quote]
