I really don't think it is as statistically uncommon as people make it out to be.  I think we totally overstate the idea that fertility declines in the late 30s, and so a lot of people think it's "unlikely" to get pregnant from one time when you are in your late 30s or early 40s, so they roll the dice and figure the odds are in their favor.  It's just not very uncommon and we are doing people a disservice by overstating the fertility declines.  [/quote]

It's especially not uncommon for women who have previously had children.  If you have two kids, your body has already demonstrated that you are fertile.  It used to be pretty common for women to have a third or fourth or fifth kid in their late 30s/early 40s.  Secondary fertility issues exist, but are not the norm.  So a demonstrably fertile woman having unprotected sex should not be surprised if she gets pregnant.  [/quote]
