I’m black. I am, what has been described all my life by people of all races and in the few countries I have lived in, as very beautiful by people of all races. I’m slim but not overly toned and I dress very well though not seductively. I’ve never felt less than in that regard. I’ve been stopped in the streets by men and women, heard whispered comments, told to my face many more times than I can count. Even in middle age I still get admiring glances, compliments and comments. Men, young and older stop their cars to either just compliment or ask me out. I think beauty has a universal translation.
Sure women of extraordinary beauty are celebrated no matter the race. But a harder question is whether a women of color who is not gorgeous, just pretty in an everage or typical way is seen that way in broader american culture.
