We have a sedan. It's been fine since our kid was born three years ago. I would prefer a hatchback and that's probably what we'll switch to when we upgrade our car, because I think they have better visibility and it's just easier to pack a hatchback/wagon for longer trips than to deal with the trunk.

Among the benefits of a smaller car with kids:

- Our kid could climb in and out of the car and her carseat by the time she was about 18 months. This is a HUGE help when you are trying to load up the car or have groceries. It's just not possible with an SUV until they are much older. At 3, my kid can do everything but buckle herself into her carseat, including open the car door.

- Easier to park and maneuver, which is really helpful when you have a kid who needs to pee *right now* or have to back into a spot to pick up or drop off furniture or sports gear. This coms in especially handy if you travel with your car at all. We've parked our small sedan in Manhattan and Maine and Nashville and Charleston and I've never thought "wow, I wish this car was larger and didn't fit so well in so many places!"

- Better visibility of your own child. The reason SUVs have to have all the rear cameras and motion sensors is because it's way too easy to run over children in them. And people have. I shorter car with good visibility is much, much safer. Less importantly, your also less likely to drive over bikes and other toys this way.[/quote]
