We have two kids (no dog) and a Honda Fit. No one "needs" an SUV.

I had a Honda Pilot for 7 years and loved it. I now have a Honda CRV and its been fine too. I needed the extra Cargo space in the Pilot to fit a stroller back there plus the two dogs. Now theres no stroller or other baby gear the CRV is fine.
I don't like dogs on the seats. I like them in their own area.
If you live around here even if you are a first responder it is nuts to get an SUV just to get to work in an area that has barely had any snow the last 5 years. Of course I'm aware that for some bizarre reason lots of first responders live 2 hours from work.
What’s bizarre about not being paid enough to be able to live closer?

We have a sedan, which I understand were becoming less popular. Now that is the car I took to the store for contactless pickups, because I can simply pop the trunk, get my stuff and be on my way. I watched a women in an SUV in front of me, and she had a newborn in a rear facing seat breathing in whatever with the rear hatch door wide open.

I had a Jetta until my daughter was 9. At that point the Jetta died and I chose between a station wagon and an SUV. Primarily so that we could take one (or more) of her friends with us camping. The cooler wouldn't fit in the Jetta's trunk so it rode in the back seat. (And she was still riding in the back seat for another couple of years).
As your kid gets older, you may find yourself still driving multiple kids around -- at least if your kid is an extrovert like mine. A camping trip or road trip with just the 'rents is apparently cruel and unusual punishment.

No, you don't need an SUV. Everyone in this thread saying you do... has an SUV. Self-confirmation bias.
We have a sedan. It's been fine since our kid was born three years ago. I would prefer a hatchback and that's probably what we'll switch to when we upgrade our car, because I think they have better visibility and it's just easier to pack a hatchback/wagon for longer trips than to deal with the trunk.
Among the benefits of a smaller car with kids:
- Our kid could climb in and out of the car and her carseat by the time she was about 18 months. This is a HUGE help when you are trying to load up the car or have groceries. It's just not possible with an SUV until they are much older. At 3, my kid can do everything but buckle herself into her carseat, including open the car door.
- Easier to park and maneuver, which is really helpful when you have a kid who needs to pee *right now* or have to back into a spot to pick up or drop off furniture or sports gear. This coms in especially handy if you travel with your car at all. We've parked our small sedan in Manhattan and Maine and Nashville and Charleston and I've never thought "wow, I wish this car was larger and didn't fit so well in so many places!"
- Better visibility of your own child. The reason SUVs have to have all the rear cameras and motion sensors is because it's way too easy to run over children in them. And people have. I shorter car with good visibility is much, much safer. Less importantly, your also less likely to drive over bikes and other toys this way.

Probably not. When I was growing up in the 80's, no one had an SUV. I don't even think any of my friends' parents had a station wagon. I got a small SUV when my child was 7 but I didn't need it.

You don't need one but, as others have said, you need a car with space for big items like strollers and bikes. A station wagon would be fine. People get by with smaller cars.
I have one child in elementary school and have never needed to seat more than two kids. I have wished for a larger car when driving my parents around (4 adults plus a car seat) but that's not frequent and we manage. I grew up with Suburbans and my parents drove 6 or 7 neighborhood kids to school but that's not as common here.

Nope - you don't need an SUV for even one of those things (I know from first hand experience on every one of your arguments) and I bet most of the miles in your SUV are you driving alone somewhere.

Yup and now that everyone is driving SUVs everyone is less safe and we are killing our planet to boot. Oh and the higher rollover rates for SUVs completely negates the safety benefits of driving a bigger car.
