All your eggs being in one basket is very, very stressful. Everything became so much easier and laid back after I had a second child.
PP here - to add, when my parents were deciding, Dad said that he wanted to have either no kids or at least two. His aunt and uncle had lost their only child and it destroyed them.
I’m sorry but this is the most depressing reason to have a second child.
Also, the people I know who had multiple children and one died were gutted anyway. It's not like you say, "Oh, well at least I have another kid." You're devastated. In my observation, it destroys marriages and lives even if you have other kids. I don't know why you'd want someone to talk you into a second. If you want two kids, have a second. If you don't, it's completely fine to have one kid. No one will ever tell you that they regret their second kid, because they love their second kid, but that doesn't mean that they wouldn't have also been happy with one. The world doesn't need more people. Your kid doesn't need a sibling. The only reason to have another kid is because you truly want one and think you could be good parents.
