Yes it was his middle name but, when He entered West Point and the person thought his name first name was Ulysses Simpson Grant and he just went with it because he liked the initials better. Now I read this over a year ago and I can't check the book because my brother borrowed it but, this is what I remember. I do agree Hiram is horrible thought!
