Fairfax County is coasting on it’s reputation from the 80’s and 90’s, but the current reality is very different. Back then, the county’s schools were considered good county-wide. Now, some schools are quite good and others pretty bad.
The US News ratings are based on recent data, which continues to indicate that the top FCPS schools are the best in the state, based on a range of metrics that FCPS didn't pick.
You missed my point. I’m not arguing that the top FCPS schools aren’t best in the state. My point is that FCPS used to be better, period. There was less of a gap between the “good” schools and the “bad” schools. Although Lee and Mount Vernon were never in the same league as McLean or Langley, they were considered much better than they are now. Back then, all of the HS were considered pretty good, and none were “bad” like now. It’s a shame.
So what happened?
Bad redistricting decisions that took affluent neighborhoods out of some schools and concentrated poverty in others, along with an increase in immigration from poor countries and growth in needy populations. Some schools were hurt worse than others.
