Sorry for a dumb question (little experience with sports). What are pro/con for playing travel vs High School soccer? Do colleges only recruit travel players? Any other considerations?
Boys or girls?
Boys. Thanks.
Many of the Boys will do both. DA is still the path for the most competitive D1 soccer programs, but a lot of D1,D2, and D3 Schools will look at boys primarily in travel clubs. If your not DA, you are more likely to have success with regional schools and their familiarity with your club. Most colleges are not really providing much weight/value to the HS teams. There are exceptions to the HS side when you are dealing with private/catholic schools but these are becoming more rare. Many of the local leagues and clubs accommodate HS by front loading or back loading games. From what I’ve seen, most boys will focus on HS during that season for the social/experience benefits, but still use the club team for training value. HS soccer is not great for development, but primarily focused on getting a bunch of disparate players jibing well enough to win games. One caution if pursuing both, overtraining is very real. Many HS teams will have a significant number of injured players on the bench during the season, and many club teams will he challenged to field full squads.
Thank you. Very helpful answer. DS played travel but now play HS due to multiple conflicts. Will look at more academic colleges (likely D3) and hopes to walk on if possible. Not aiming for soccer scholarship as such.
