Johns Hopkins University. It doesn't get a lot of love here on DCUM but it is a great school and every kid I know who has gone there has loved it.
If you don't want to go to GU because it is too close, JHU isn't going to solve that.
Maybe, maybe not. 45 min to an hour away is a meaningful difference from around the corner.
+1 It certainly means you won't randomly run into mom and dad while you're out doing a Target run because you need clean socks. Besides strong academics and a world-class medical school, Hopkins has some great things going for it and a 1-2 hour proximity, depending on where you live in the DMV, is one of them. The kid in our NoVa neighborhood catches the train to Union Station once every 2-3 weeks and meets his dad for lunch. Then he trains it back to school with a full belly and a fresh c-note in his wallet. That seems like almost a perfect distance to me. Anyway for some reason Hopkins doesn't get a lot of love here on DCUM but it is a great school and has world-wide name recognition because of the medical school. That certainly beats the world-wide lack of name recognition for some of our state schools, including my highly ranked state school and alma mater.
