Northwestern is a great school, I have a kid there, but I wouldn't call it an urban campus by any means. It's on the edge of downtown Evanston which is more like the Bethesda or Arlington of Chicago. It's like a 30 minute El ride to the Chicago Loop.

On the other hand, its lakefront location is hard to beat. It's a spectacularly beautiful campus (when it's not 10 below).

I was in your exact same shoes many moons ago and ended up deciding to attend Boston College. Best decision ever! Lots of students there also accepted to Georgetown!

DP, but WashU is also one of the few top 20 schools to offer signficant (though hard to get) merit scholarships. I'd definitely put it on the consideration list for any kid who wants top academics and a more urban environment, along with some of the others already mentioned like Tufts, Rice, Macalester, USC, etc.

Wow, what did WashU ever do to you?? For the record, it was MY kid's first choice school, she didn't apply to any Ivies, and she's been admitted Early Decision 1. It's a great school, as are many other colleges ranked lower and higher, so get over yourself. And I'm very happy to hear your kid isn't going there.

Can you elaborate? Why would these kids be stuck up more than other schools when college admissions is practically a crap shoot? Can you describe what you mean by stuck up? What is the behavior? Why not fit in outside GU?? What do they do or not do that makes this so?

--not a Wash U alum, but have had 3 relatives and several friends who went there as their no. 1 choice.

BTW, my relatives got full financial aid because they had no money.

+1 It certainly means you won't randomly run into mom and dad while you're out doing a Target run because you need clean socks. Besides strong academics and a world-class medical school, Hopkins has some great things going for it and a 1-2 hour proximity, depending on where you live in the DMV, is one of them.

The kid in our NoVa neighborhood catches the train to Union Station once every 2-3 weeks and meets his dad for lunch. Then he trains it back to school with a full belly and a fresh c-note in his wallet. That seems like almost a perfect distance to me.

Anyway for some reason Hopkins doesn't get a lot of love here on DCUM but it is a great school and has world-wide name recognition because of the medical school. That certainly beats the world-wide lack of name recognition for some of our state schools, including my highly ranked state school and alma mater.

I agree the that assessment.

I went to Georgetown SFS because I wanted to work in the government (which I do). I think it was excellent preparation for my job. However, I don't necessarily think it's the best option for people who aren't very sure they want to pursue a career in the government, DC-based non-profits, international banking, or some areas of the law. I think Georgetown is particularly strong in those areas, but like others said, the facilities are not great and the overall campus culture isn't quite as strong as at other schools.

To make it worth it, you really need to want to use your college education to prepare you for a DC-based career.

I'm hoping Georgetown will improve their campus as they aim to raise more money -- it's worth noting that they've only had an endowment for 20 years.

Tufts has a strong IR program, if that’s what appealed to G-town for OP academically.

I went to Georgetown, originally from FCPS. You can go home as much or as little as you want if you live on campus. Some semesters I barely saw my family. Just in case you still want Georgetown.
