I don't text and drive. That's not the issue. Have you seen the pics they showed on the news of people in their cars? It is unreal what a creepy police state we are living in these days. This is a free country. People should willingly obey the laws, not obey them because they are being filmed by the state. That is just wrong.[/quote]

Actually there are lots and lots of accidents.

No western country has anywhere close to the number of traffic fatalities per capita that we have in the US.

There are actually quite a few studies now showing that using a phone while driving is more dangerous than driving drunk:

I have $5,000 cash that says I'm a better driver with a cel phone in hand than you are driving drunk.

We can test this. We can know this answer for certain. Closed course, private property. Legal waivers. Under supervision. We will both drive an identical car around an identical course, with identical surprise challenges. I'll talk on the phone with the phone held to my ear for two laps, and do two more laps while texting short responses to one sentence texts. You will drive with a blood alcohol level of .12, the statistical average level of all DUI crashes.

I put up $5,000 cash.
