My Grandparents used to send a check. I later learned that my parents used that check to sponsor a family. We would all be assigned a kid our age to shop for. Grandma and Grandpa also gave us all savings bonds every year so we got something from them. We just didn't get a toy. My Mom later explained that we had enough and other kids had nothing, that it was better for us to share as a family instead of getting more from ourselves. I would have protested at 7-12 but as an older teen, when I learned about this, I was cool with it. [/quote]
