Do your kids only have one set of grandparents, or do they go in together?
THey have three sets, but get gifts from one set. One set is estranged and the second set sends a check, which the kids don’t get told about.
Why wouldn’t you tell them that they are still getting a gift but you are putting it away for later?
Because there's no point. They don't need to know.
My Grandparents used to send a check. I later learned that my parents used that check to sponsor a family. We would all be assigned a kid our age to shop for. Grandma and Grandpa also gave us all savings bonds every year so we got something from them. We just didn't get a toy. My Mom later explained that we had enough and other kids had nothing, that it was better for us to share as a family instead of getting more from ourselves. I would have protested at 7-12 but as an older teen, when I learned about this, I was cool with it.
