Where are you folks getting 40 minutes on metro? Right now at 6 am, it’s a 40 min metro ride from metro center to Reston. At rush hour, it will easily be 70 minutes. So a family of 4 is going to schlep their luggage on a crowded train? No. Business travelers whose business will pay for an Uber from downtown? No. I drive to Dulles all the time. With HOT lanes 66 is never crowded and access road is fast. Young singletons that used to take the 5A? Sure they will be on the train. Agree though, Amtrak at BWI is the stuff of nightmares.
Yes.
Absolutely agree. They'll pay $12 max for the trip, as opposed to an Uber for a family of 4 which will be at least $60 or long-term parking at the airport -- $25 a day. Not even including the cost of tolls on I-66.
If you are far enough for an uber to be $60+, the metro fare will be a lot more than $3/person, especially if you are in rush hour, which is defined very broadly by metro. Many people will also need to take an uber from the metro because there aren't that many people who can walk to a metro stop, especially with luggage. It will still be cheaper than an uber from Dulles, but I think you are delusional if you think there are a lot of families of four that are going to take metro. If you are flying with 4 people you are looking at a bare minimum of $1,000 in airfare, more likely at least $1,200 and often quite a lot more. Tacking on uber fare just isn't that big a deal when you factor in how much time and aggravation you will save, particularly if you have to take more than one metro line.
