It was extraordinary tight -- in part because large parts of the grass near the monument were fenced off. There were probably the same number of people as in prior years, but pushed into about half the area. It was also peak cherry blossom day. Intersections were really crowded with throngs of people moving through the intersection. Not helped in the least by drivers who were blocking the crosswalks (seriously, DC needs to get serious about blocking the box, and ticket folks who move into intersections before the intersection is clear).
What's up with that? It was crazy crowded and so frustrating trying to get around the monument.
+1. We were there from 9:30 to 1:30. My 3 year old made a kite and had a BLAST flying it and playing in the bubble tent. Then we walked down to the blossoms and by the time we got back it was insanely crowded and took forever to get on the metro. Next year we'll try to get there even earlier.
