Your first reason should not get you into trouble if you just explain you bought the Fitbit but then remembered too late she might prefer and Apple watch, and you offer to exchange it. The second reason makes you sound cheap. I wouldn't bring it up unless purchasing the Apple watch will actually make a dent in your savings, or your wife is likely to agree that the extra cost is not worth it. I personally think they are overpriced but would have no difficulty actually affording one for DH if that was what he really wanted.
+1. If it’s a matter of can’t afford, I agree with everyone else that said it would be better to go with another line of gifts than to get the not quite what the person asked for when it’s your spouse. Yes like a PP said, it’s like getting a cat for someone that wants a dog and saying a pet is a pet and the cat was more affordable. Or getting a window laptop for someone that loves Mac. Or imagine you really wanted a jersey from your favorite team and your spouse gets one on sale for a different team because it was cheaper. And I say this as someone with a Fitbit that doesn’t want an Apple Watch and wouldn’t want spouse to buy the more expensive option but would get him an Apple Watch if that was what he wanted.
