Because you weren’t challenged. If you were challenged, they’d ask for ID. If you could provide it, they’d let you vote regularly. If not, you would get a provisional. Because someone will complain of unfair or uneven treatment if the poll worker deviated from the standard procedure.

Consistency is important in elections. Some voters are flagged as needing to show ID and others aren't. The poll worker should follow procedure exactly to ensure fairness for all.

For example, there are a number of Amish living in MD and they are against photos, so they are unlikely to have photo ID.
