Who makes up the left wing contingent of Montgomery County, and why? Where do they stand against hte moderate Democrats or liberal Republicans? Didn't Hillary Clinton beat Bernie Sanders by a significant margin? That would suggest that if evenly matched - one moderate candidate versus one leftwing candidate - the moderate would win, no? Although I think Nancy Floreen faces a major disadvantage by not being a Democrat, as many voters are probably not paying attention to local elections so much and will just vote against the Party of Trump at any cost. But then, maybe she will have an advantage being a woman. From what I hear, Maryland Democrats I know appear to have lost respect for her and resent her for a "spoiler campaign."
The left wing contingent of Montgomery County comes mostly from the eastern county. The unions, previous county council, BOE and MCCPTA are all dominated by the eastern county. The local democratic party office is now dominated by the east because its testing the waters to move further into more progressive territory. They aren't in-line with the moderates. They can effect elections when nothing is too wrong that people don't pay attention. Moderates will vote for the most familiar name. However, this time there are too many problems. The school system being such a disaster is one big hit along with seeing all the job growth in VA. If you are driving across the county in terrible traffic with everyone else going to work in VA, you stop to think about why there are more professional jobs in MD. No one who commutes to VA hasn't at least searched around to see if there is anything equal that does require crossing the bridge.
So, Takoma Park/Silver Spring is to blame? It does seem that Gerogia Avenue to 16th street forms some kind of "woke" belt beginning in DC. Columbia Heights, Adams Morgan, Petworth, Downtown Silver Spring. A lot of young people out of college who care a lot about "social justice" but not enough about the burdens on the taxpayer.
