Macalester is a good school if you can deal with damn Minnesota sing-song accent. Historic rankings are available here: http://andyreiter.com/datasets/ (Carleton started at #4; I was mistaken.)
Although dropped to the teens for the next decade
Grinnell in the top ten as far back as the 80s. So much for the “Carleton in another tier for 40 years” claim.
Dude, you started this posting that you wouldn't pay for Macalester if your kid got into Carleton or Grinnell because those schools were so much better based on rankings. And fortunately your kids was so smart they got into both and Grinnell gave merit aid (presuably because they have a large endowment and need to pay people to go there rather than Carleton--that was a joke) so they wouldn't face the indignity of attending Macalester. You will note your post is merely a brag and doesn't contribute to the discussion. However, if your going to live and die by ratings, I'm going to shove it back in your face. Carleton is in a better "tier" than Grinnell because I put "tier" in quotes in this post and prior so I can definitely it in whatever way I want. All in all, you aren't doing Grinnell any favors, which despite being in Iowa, is a fine school.
