Why the added pressure? My kid applied to a bunch of schools and did not commit to one early because he wanted more time to make the decision. I hate when posters recommend trying to play the admissions game like this.

Dude, you started this posting that you wouldn't pay for Macalester if your kid got into Carleton or Grinnell because those schools were so much better based on rankings. And fortunately your kids was so smart they got into both and Grinnell gave merit aid (presuably because they have a large endowment and need to pay people to go there rather than Carleton--that was a joke) so they wouldn't face the indignity of attending Macalester. You will note your post is merely a brag and doesn't contribute to the discussion. However, if your going to live and die by ratings, I'm going to shove it back in your face. Carleton is in a better "tier" than Grinnell because I put "tier" in quotes in this post and prior so I can definitely it in whatever way I want.
All in all, you aren't doing Grinnell any favors, which despite being in Iowa, is a fine school.
And so is Carleton. As I said, I would’ve paid for it. So I, in fact, didn’t live and die by the rankings now, did I?

This may be particularly true if you are from Virginia. SLACs view competition from lower priced quality publics, particularly UVA and W&M, as acute.

This is true for sure. And Grinnell was always in the top dozen or so until they started including the service academies. Now they’re back up to where they belong

Nope, I said it wasn’t always as highly ranked. The rankings haven’t affected the greatness, other than being better known now.
I also don’t believe in hyping Carleton (or any school) by denigrating other schools, which is what both an anti Grinnell poster on another thread, and an anti macalester poster on this thread) seem to like to do.

USNWR started their rankings in 1983 I believe while I was at Carleton. I believe it was ranked #8 in the first ranking of Liberal Arts Colleges.
