8th grade "graduation" is a huge deal at my city school (not DC). Only about 75% of the kids will graduate from HS so they go over the top with it. I think it is also a cultural thing as the kindergarten "graduation" is just as big of a deal. The girls look like they are headed to their 1st Communion or their wedding. Many of them have make-up on and some have hair extensions. The first time I attended I thought that this is what pageants must be like (ala Jon Benet Ramsey).
There's no need to put "graduation" in quotes, you know. People certainly did used to graduate from 8th grade. It was the end of elementary school. Remember where Sarah in All-Of-A-Kind Family graduates from 8th grade and doesn't win the history prize?
