Went to grad school at Vanderbilt sight unseen because it was the top in my field and it was a huge mistake. The women there dress up just to go to regular classes. Was so strange to see coming from a northern undergrad. For a school with such bright students it had an old fashioned, off-putting “my main goal is to meet my husband” vibe.
it's your internalized misogyny for me
I attended Vandy in the late 80’s and there was some dressing up (like for football games), but the poster has overplayed it. Vandy is very similar to UVA in its attire. There’s nothing wrong with showering before class, combing/brushing your hair, and wearing some clean clothes other than a worn T-shirt and gym shorts.
Exactly. It’s very much like UVA and if you like that, it’s your preference. It is very different from most non-southern schools. The first line about Vandy in the Fiske guide is about its “old south gentility.”
Do they add a wink after the "old south gentility" part?
If you are from the North, DO NOT consider schools from the South. They are all racist and full of fratty/ sorority morons that have no intellectual capacity to compete or live in the real world. I beg you, stick to your wonderfully open minded Northern schools that are the beacon of hope for all of humanity, it is the only way to save this world!
Nice try. That’s not what was said. There are many bad northern culture characteristics too. Students should know what their choices are and then “pick their poison.”
No, it was spot on.
It is. I grew up in the South and went to a so called Southern Ivy. I have friends who stayed and whose kids are there now. It’s a very insular area with many folks, especially 50+ seeing no problem with saying that everyone is happier when like stays with like. It’s how it’s meant to be. Everyone is happier if they keep to their own religion, race, etc. we can like together, not mix. Now, RTP, Charlotte, Atlanta, Charleston have are obviously not in the same category. But get outside the metro areas and it’s different. My MIL is a deep blue Dem who worked against getting MTG elected (DH grew up in her district. Hated it). And despite being otherwise progressive and not listening to Fox News was up Kherson when Lee HS was renamed and was really a get about cancelling Southern heritage. And even blue bloods in the metro areas are very socially conservative. It’s a very “and who is your family, dear and what church do you attend place”. Women who without sarcasm call you “hon”. Lots of people love it. Just know what you are getting into. I would send a kid to the South for college. They have culture shock and hate it.
