I think the black PPs just honestly find it impossible to believe that Banneker is neither as intellectually rigorous nor as successful at preparing students for top colleges as other available options, especially for whites, Asians, Latinos and high SES blacks.
So be it.
Oh come on. Banneker is clearly doing something very right, given its college placement and AP results. Maybe it is not the same as TJ but that is not the question. The question is why don't any white parents, at all, even consider this very good school as compared to other good DC options like Walls and Wilson?
I don't understand the comparison to TJ. According to the latest stats, white people are shunning TJ, and the Asian population is increasingly dominant. So based on this thread, most of the whites who responded said that the school was not rigorous enough; the school was no TJ; and, the school reported too low SAT scores. Hmm, if that is truly the reason, why are whites also declining in enrollment at TJ?
Go find the SAT scores for TJ, compare them to Wilson and to Banneker, and you will see the answer.
No, that's not the answer to the question. White people are using SAT scores for their reasons to not send their children to Banneker. What is the reason for white people not sending their children to TJ, a largely Asian populated magnet school with great SAT scores?

Many families IB for non-Deal feeding ES have been clamoring for this for some time. Will the profile be similar to Banneker (strong academic focus but lack of diversity)? Would consider Winston campus in Hillcrest from Ward 6 but other locations might mean tougher commute.
To answer original question -- like many, our children too young to make this decision yet and the historical burden of other families preferences has little bearing. We'd probably rank Walls higher but still consider Banneker even as an "only". Less likely to consider Eastern. But who knows what will happen in the next 7-8 years?
I think diversity would in part be a function of neighborhood, proximity and transportation options. A centrally located selective admission MS near all major bus routes would probably be very diverse.

It was interesting that the Jay Matthews article made that claim about Banneker's AP scores, because the "scorecard" on the DCPS website places the percentage of scores 3 or higher for Banneker at 22%. Wilson is at 49% and Walls is 67%.

how is this bigotry? There's no breakdown by race or sex of the students. Kipp kids appear to be enrolling in and completing college studies at 2 to 5 times the rate of low income kids overall. I think this is a positive development. I doubt that the college completion rate of low income kids will ever match that of wealthier peers as financing college is a major challengeAnonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:I think KIPP's stats look good, considering that most of their students are low income.Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Really? They track the kids in college? How do you know this, and is their drop out rate due to academics or finances?Anonymous wrote:
Based on what? SAT scores? Everything else Banneker is going better. It is not a glorified KIPP. Have you ever been to KIPP or Banneker that you can make that statement? KIPP has been struggling b/c their kids can't stay in college. It's a military style approach. Banneker students are very successful in college and it's just an academically rigorous school. Not KIPP.
KIPP does track the kids in college.

There really isn't any comparison between the two. Nationwide, according to the data KIPP releases, only 39% of their high school students even get a single 3 on an AP test. At Banneker, plenty of kids get 5's. 84% participate in AP and the % of scores 3 or higher is 89%, according to a recent Post article.
Soft bigotry of low expectations.
