“Scissors emerged and I watched in the mirror as my locks of long curly hair fell in piles on the floor. There I was in my plaid button down shirt, grinning sheepishly as my tour mates and friends cheered on my haircut. This simple thing that everyone does. But I had a secret. For me, it was more than a change of hairstyle. When I was 24, I decided to completely reinvent myself.” Do you think that if Britney wrote this instead of Taylor, she would have been lauded for shaving her head? Is it more about the fact that Britney grew up without a strong support system, so she wasn’t able to express herself like Taylor even though the act of cutting hair was very similar and done for similar purposes: a young woman expressing herself. Why has one earned a billion dollars and the other the scorn of society? Why do you think that is DCUM?
Taylor really benefited the pop stars that came before her I think that that gave her a road map of things to avoid. I also think that she benefited from social media and the ability to have her own narratives and create mystery for the fans and media to follow. I think that one of the biggest factors is that Taylor had to seemingly supportive parents who were independently wealthy and they eere not relying on her as their meal ticket. I think that they've had the money to invest in her and also help her make wise business decisions I think Britney and Taylor motivated by different Taylor things I think Britney likes to be the performer whereas Taylor is more of a creator. Very emotionally connected to the songs that she wrote and wanted to have ownership over them which is why she really really lost all of her albums. Not saying this to criticize either person I just think they're motivated by different things artistically
I agree with a lot of what you say. I just think Taylor is given a lot of god-like qualities from her fans. I think Taylor should acknowledge other women who went through hell so she could have it easy and acknowledge her family made it easy as well. She is benefiting from a TON of privilege she has only just begun to understand. (At least in the Ms. Americana video). She irritates me for this reason- that she doesn’t understand how easy her road has been. I disagree that Britney is just a performer. I just started listening to her book and she really wants to be more than just a performer, but in order to survive her childhood she had to earn money and be a performer. There wasn’t a fall back, she was in many senses the breadwinner of her family from a very young age. (At 9 she was entertaining in a restaurant). I think Britney’s Everytime song and video are and example that she is a creator also. It is easy to be a creative when you have unlimited backing, and much more difficult to do so when YOU are a child supporting your family.
Good points. Again I'm not criticizing or diminishing Britney's talents. She said in her own book she was more motivated by the joy of performing. I don't know if she's in a place now where she feels more comfortable to create she's no longer in a terrible abusive conservatorship
