This question might be off topic, but if we do open this week, won’t we need to do 2 hour delays everyday - since there’s a danger that Middle Schoolers who walk in the early morning could be hit by cars?
Yes and that’s fine by me. It feels like the right amount of risk tolerance.
Whole problem here is the terrible decision making by folks being paid 300-400k year. You cannot reasonably claim, if conditions were so “unsafe” that entire school system had to close, that conditions tomorrow will be materially any better tomorrow (or Wed/Thurs for that matter). So leadership is either OK with another full week of no school (which is terrible ninny timid leadership) OR will hypocritically move the goal posts later this week.
Shocking development. Perfect goal post movement: FCPS trying to tell us that such Herculean progress was made in one day that we went FROM it's not remotely safe for 180,000 students to possibly enter schools TO all clear now, everything is tip top shape, all our safety concerns have been ameliorated. Don't they realize how ridiculous they look as credible decision makers? If they can go back 2 hour delay tomorrow, they 100% could have (and should have) today as well.
Or... more like ... things were really close to being ready for today, but not quite there. With the extra day of work put into clearing the worst of the issues today, it's good enough to open tomorrow, but only with a 2-hour delay to give people extra time to navigate the traffic issues and make sure the middle schoolers have daylight at their bus stops. Doesn't sound so crazy when you look at it that way. Of course it's never going to go from 100% terrible to 100% perfect in one day ... but at some point it has to tip over to "good enough".
There’s no meaningful difference in conditions yesterday vs. today. The snowcrete isn’t melting. There are still huge ice piles everywhere and at the bus stops. They could have opened yesterday with a delay, but they didn’t. I actually feel bad for people like you. You don’t have to defend every FCPS decision. Some of their decisions are just bad and wrong. You don’t have to accept whatever scraps they throw your way with a smile on your face - it’s ok and good to disagree and call out the people in charge, and it’s even ok to vent when they get it wrong.
