Victim beaten and robbed in front of Kramer Books in Dupont this afternoon during rush hour. Assailants were armed - knives & gun. [twitter]https://twitter.com/ChuckThies/status/1751026727243886671[/twitter]
HOW? Did no one see, call the police, intervene? This makes me want to vomit. I grew up here, had many late night nachos at Kramer books, dates there, and just browsing the shelves. Unlike most Kramer customers, I vote middle Democrat, independent or Republican for local politics. You all need to take a good look in the mirror for what your votes have done to our city. Who benefitted? Certainly not the folks you think you are helping, and definitely no one else. Change course. You can be a good person AND want sane policy on crime and social issues.
People did call the police. Multiple assailants had guns and knives and were beating someone in broad daylight. What would you have people do?
Vote differently? Vote the bums out? Vote for anyone with crime platform that isnt allenesque or with an R next to their name for city government? What do you want to do?
Easy to say, which of the Whites would have been better on crime in the mayor's race?
Mayor Bowser begged the council to not strip police funding. Begged. I don't like her and what she is doing with destroying CRE / propping up condo development bros, and so I voted for the totally reasonable Republican two terms ago-do you recall that was an option, not just the two Whites last round? However, she has tried to raise the alarm on the Councils disastrous crime moves a couple of times. Yes, she needs to be far more aggressive with them and the district and federal attorneys dropping charges and the disastrous judges we have in this city. But she's on a better side of this than those entities - they are who I am referring to when I say "vote the bums out" and "shine light on this".
A Republican ran the last time as well. That is an option. You won't get zapped from space if you check the R on a municipal election. However, I retierate that Bowser has historically been pro a robust police force. As was her Republican opponent, Stacia Hall: https://www.businessinsider.com/results-muriel-bowser-stacia-hall-washington-dc-mayoral-election-2022 "With the city experiencing increases in violent crime, crime and public safety emerged as leading issues on voters' minds. Bowser, who in 2020 had a section of 16th Street NW near the White House painted with the words "Black Lives Matter" and renamed a section of the street Black Lives Matter Plaza, pushed to increase the number of police officers, a point she touted during a television debate earlier in June. "I'm going to make the tough calls when it comes to violent crime, including making sure we have the police that we need," she said. Hall, Bowser's challenger, is a senior rental consultant and small business owner from Ward 3. According to her campaign website, Hall is a single mother who experienced homelessness. The primary focus of her campaign was public safety: If she had been elected, she said she would have put more police officers in schools and developed incentives to have officers live in the neighborhoods they police. Independent Rodney Grant and Libertarian Dennis Sobin were also on the ballot in 2022."
