And it is his fear of dying young and leaving a grief-stricken, beloved wife behind that makes him want to find a somewhat distant, detached “Ton” wife who he doesn’t love. He fights against his attraction to Kate (which is more cerebral than sexual at least at first in the book) because he thinks he must marry someone who doesn’t love him. Edwina is biddable and seeks a good match, and she’s sweet and pretty and “accomplished” but she doesn’t love him either, which is what he wants. [/quote]
