Life with small kids is hectic. Jobs, raising your kids, responsibilities both financial and otherwise can be draining for all of us. With someone like Chris you add the mistress and time with her is all about flirting, ego boosting, nature hikes, sex, no responsibilities. It's amazing how some people can think that life with that person would be a 24/7 version of that. It wouldn't be. Even if they never had kids they would take on their own sets of responsibilities that would be draining. That's why such a large percentage of relationships that begin as affairs FAIL.
