When did that start?  I know there was free tuition back around my parents' generation (60's and 70's maybe?) but by the time I went to a UC in 1993, there was definitely tuition, and my family was middle class.   If I remember correctly, tuition was roughly $4k/year.   Cal States were cheaper, just under $2k per year.[/quote]
