[twitter]https://x.com/byheatherlong/status/1991500622533730392?s=46&t=kf1qYlCXQnKgUhJWEIu2vg[/twitter]
Unemployment rate would be delayed, would 't it, for folks who get laid off with severance? My DH has been unemployed since mid August but we received 14 weeks severance which runs out this month. So he has not filed for unemployment yet. Would I be correct to guess that the October layoff bonanza won't hit the unemployment rate till a couple months afterwards?
People who have filed for unemployment benefits is a different metric that’s also tracked. This survey is just whether you’re employed or unemployed - someone who had lost a job but was still receiving severance would count as unemployed. Sorry about your DH.
I do not think you are right about that. It does not make sense, for how can that be gathered and calculated. If PPP's DH does not apply for unemployment benefits, there is no way for the government to know if he is unemployed or not to include in the data. Someone receiving a severance pay can be employed at a different job, so why would the government put them in a survey as unemployed? Anecdotally, I personally received a severance check for twelve weeks while I worked in a new job for ten of those weeks. I was never included in any government data as unemployed.
