I was just watching something where they were talking about the tactical response to such events. How we need to train first law enforcement on the scene to respond immediately.....there can be no waiting for "tactical" units to respond because the perpetrators expect to die. Even if the first responders can't sort out the innocent vs. perpetrators in the moment, it is still better for the greater group of innocent people for the immediate response to neutralize the situation asap. I guess I understand that approach, and the need for it in dire circumstances, but it sent a chill through my bones. How horrible to be in law enforcement faced with such a situation.
We were in France for a month this past summer. They are a bit more revved up than what you describe and have been for some time. For example, it is not "law enforcement " per se that is first to respond. Yes, the have a police force, but more visibly all of Paris, Lyon and other major cities and ALL of the major train stations have the military out in full flak jackets and machine giuns at the ready ,walking right by the back packer college kids and train passengers. Many also have K-9 with them. We saw a few chador wearing women with their husbands and kids waiting fro trains and when these pairs of military patrols would come through the station, they would just melt away ( dissapear ) Literally, I'd look down to sip my expresso, look up and see the flak jacket guys and the muslims would be just gone. The French will deal with them. No doubt in my mind.
