Yes, it is too sad. The innocents are always the ones who suffer, including the innocent Syrian refugee families who are really so thankful to their host countries and bear no ill will at all. We were in France for a month this past summer. They are a bit more revved up than what you describe and have been for some time.

For example, it is not "law enforcement " per se that is first to respond. Yes, the have a police force, but more visibly all of Paris, Lyon and other major cities and ALL of the major train stations have the military out in full flak jackets and machine giuns at the ready ,walking right by the back packer college kids and train passengers. Many also have K-9 with them.

We saw a few chador wearing women with their husbands and kids waiting fro trains and when these pairs of military patrols would come through the station, they would just melt away ( dissapear ) Literally, I'd look down to sip my expresso, look up and see the flak jacket guys and the muslims would be just gone.

The French will deal with them. No doubt in my mind.

If you watch CNN there is a journalist named Julien Pearce who was at the show and he says he was able to escape because he was at the front of the stage and just bolted out the backstage door, which was the closest exit. Gunmen came in through the front. So the only way out was to get out the back or to hide. He said he was able to run out the back when he heard the gunmen reloading. That they were just there randomly shooting people, there was no planned hostage demands, etc. They didn't even talk to the people.

And who is going to go after the weapons traders who enabled them to get the guns ? Without the weapons, what are they ?

People don't seem to get that aspect : un-regulated machine gun smuggling, sales and gun dealers selling weapons to all parties of conflict in Middle East without a care for anything but counting their money.

Your JJ revenge killing assumption only works if this was a sleeper cell that was activated to avenge JJs death. These people knew their targets, and where police security would or could not be readily available. This is the third attack on France in less than a year. I'm thinking these attackers are home-grown and not new refugees.
