Reports are coming from several different country officials: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/may/22/gaza-flotilla-activists-allege-sexual-assault-and-in-israeli-detention
The Jewish people I know are some of the kindest people I know with a strong sense of moral clarity. And yet they seem to reflexively protect Israel. When you see stories like this (and many others), it is hard to understand how they are managing the cognitive dissonance. Israel seems like it’s governed by a bunch of thugs.
Agree. American Jews have been at the forefront of civil rights and fighting for the underdog and generally against evil. I feel like this reflexive embrace of Israel makes them lose the moral high ground they have always and justly occupied.
Israel is very important to many of us, just like fighting for the underdog in America is. I don't suppose anyone not Jewish will understand that. I look at the long arc of history and know in my bones that there is one place in the world whose sole purpose is to protect *me.* America? Hardly. It wasn't that long ago that the St. Louis was turned away in the water and Jews were sent to their deaths. And now? Yeah, right, I trust Trump and his jackboot thugs to keep me safe. And with Democrats like Maureen Galindo who want to put "Zionists" in camps, the left is barely better. Warts and all, Israel was created to enable Jews to survive and flourish and get us back to our roots that reach back thousands of years, despite the haters claiming that tie doesn't exist. (There has been much ancient Hebrew found during archeological digs.) Don't forget that many of us have relatives in Israel. I do. I've been there. I know these people. They, like most of us, want Netanyahu out and peace for everyone. No one enjoys having their lives disrupted the way they have been. We are waiting for principled leadership in Israel much as most of us are waiting for principled leadership of the U.S. But we will not abandon our ancestral homeland and its people to score political points--not happening.
That's fine and very understandable. However, so far the US has spent about $300 Billion supporting Israel. And the Israel of today is not the Israel of yore. Netanyahu and his government of ultra-orthodox thugs just killed 85,000 mostly innocent people in Gaza, invaded Lebanon and sent another 1 million people fleeing for their lives, sent 700,000 religious zealots in to the West Bank to take more land and terrorize people, and launched a major with the Iran, which has caused chaos and the US to expend an enormous percentage of its most advanced munitions. We literally just used half of all our THAAD interceptors - what we use to defend against a nuclear attack - to protect Israel while not being able to protect our own bases in the Gulf. You have to ask, why is the US spending such an enormous amount of money and resources to fight for a tiny but extremely belligerent country of no strategic relevance to the US? It's not 1948 anymore. There is no justification for this in 2026. And that's not a left or right issue. Pretty much everyone under 50 thinks the massive amount of money and military resources we spend on Israel is nuts.
PP: Israel actually is of very important strategic relevance to us. That you don't understand that undercuts other claims you made, many of which are false or exaggerated.
Can you explain its strategic relevance? Other than in protecting itself?
Sure, assuming these questions are being asked in good faith. It's a regional bulwark against terror. It has insane military and intelligence capabilities that have enabled us to thwart threats. Its Mossad is unparalleled. I'm very, very thankful we have it.
Yeah. I think this is all nonsense. Israel was not even able to stop a bunch of people flying in with kites. I don’t think it has thwarted any threats to the US and I think the terror threats to the US from the region have been wildly overblown. What is the use of our bases there if Israel is so useful? I think Israel’s entire reputation as an ally is propaganda.
DP. People who aren’t involved in intelligence and who consume their own sources of propaganda would naturally say this. Israel’s intelligence is second to none, except perhaps our own. They are a strategic partner against Islamic extremism. Yes, they dropped the ball on 10/7. Not going to pretend otherwise. But there are so many terrorist attacks that have been thwarted by the Israeli/US partnership about which you know nothing. We are incredibly fortunate to have a strategic partner in that location. Enough said.
DP Enough don’t believe that ^^^, anything Israel claims regarding their purported value as a strategic partner, or frankly anything that comes from the mouth of any Zionist (e.g., you) at all. We don’t want to partner with an amoral nation that has led us down amoral paths. We’re nauseated by your celebration of vengeance and violence. We don’t want it. And yes, before you refer to your Zionism for Dummies handbook of propaganda, we fully and completely reject Hamas and similar extremist groups, too. Change is coming. One way or another.
I’m not a Zionist, dimwit. I’m entirely concerned with eradicating terrorism by the Islamic extremists in that area who want nothing more than “death to America,” i.e., death to western values, Jews, Americans, and anyone who doesn’t believe in their fanatical ideology.
What you are, is an irrelevant rounding error of a scaredy cat propagandist who just repeats what you’re told by others. You’re nothing more than a drone who regurgitates the usual propaganda takes, carefully crafted by mouth breathers in special interest groups who wouldn’t stop their march toward corruption to pull your drowning face from the pool of misinformation and revisionism that they placed before you. You’re an embarrassment, and you relinquished your own free mind long ago.
Your post is 100% projection. As usual. Do continue peddling your pro-Iranian propaganda and telling us how “moral” and “humane” Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran are.
Oh, do tell us all about the nexus you found in what I wrote (essentially, that you’re a POS liar) and the “pro-Iranian” false accusation, the “Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran” false accusation, etc.!
