We have an acquaintance who eats two entrees when we go out to eat. Medium sized guy. I have wondered for years where he puts it all. Maybe he doesn't eat the rest of the day, I don't know. But he pays for both of them! It does sound like FIL has an eating disorder, which is very sad. The not paying thing is annoying but you know it's coming so if you want to continue to go out, just make your peace with it. I have 2 relatives who are absolute nightmares in restaurants - polite to staff in manner, but always asking to have a different table, or a different water glass, or to split their food in weird ways, or for the entree to come out first and the appetizer second for some reason known only to them, or for bizarre combinations or substitutions - and we know if we go out with them that it will be that way. Like one year, in a rather nice restaurant, one liked the sauce on her fish so much that she asked for more. When it came in a jug, to pour over the fish, she picked it up and drank it! Or they bring their own teabags and ask for hot water and get mad if the restaurant charges for it. Or, it turns out, one only eats unsliced bagels - not sliced. (Don't ask me how this works on a lox platter.) Knowing all this, and still wanting to maintain a relationship because we only see them yearly, we pick places where it will be less of an issue (Chinese places tend to be good on substitutions and sharing) or that we don't have a longstanding relationship with so we aren't embarrassed to go back. We still enjoy their company and over the years we have learned to deal with the restaurant oddness. Don't love it, but do love them.
