Capital, through clinics this year, Healthy Baller, American Select tryouts, team affiliation, and word of mouth, will have the team 90% picked before the tryouts ever occur. They’ll take a couple unknowns/standouts at the tryouts. If you’re an unknown commodity before tryouts, it’s highly unlikely you’ll make the top team. It’s unreasonable to think they would be able to pick the top 22 out of 150 after a 3 hour tryout (unless they’ve seen them already through the above sessions).
This has been the case for years, so not unique to any graduating year. Players and families usually have a good idea going into tryouts who will make the team. There will be a few (4-5) from the tryout who are selected to fill the roster. If you are not in the know going into the tryout your DD probably has a 5% chance of making the Blue team. The process is very political, so start working the room years in advance. It’s a great money maker for Capital, not a realistic chance for many.
Working the room for years can be helpful, but you need to have a talented player to push. So be realistic about the player's level of talent and potential before investing the time in politics. No amount of politicking in seventh grade is going to trick D1 coaches, and Capital knows this. Ultimately talent wins.
Agree talent is important, but you really need the talent and have to work the room. I’ve seen good talent be left off (for lesser talent) because there wasn’t enough of a relationship with the coaching staff. It’s unfortunate but that’s the reality of it.
