The hearing that Jessica Liu did not attend and that the Council had no power to force her to attend? https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/dc-lawmakers-slam-us-attorney-for-skipping-hate-crimes-hearing/2019/10/23/0422ed1c-f5da-11e9-ad8b-85e2aa00b5ce_story.html I thought you people hate “performative BS”?
She refused to attend, it received a lot of attention in the media, and Liu eventually responded by increasing hate crime prosecutions: https://dcist.com/story/20/01/24/following-criticism-the-u-s-attorney-for-d-c-announces-increase-in-hate-crime-prosecutions/ I don’t know why you’d leave that out and try to convince people that this was “performative BS” unless you actually are pro-crime (and it seems like there’s a crazy activist segment who is these days) and trying to discourage people from demanding any action by the Council. The Council was also outraged and demanded the USAO take action when that car thief was shot several months back (at least for the first half of the year, it was the only crime that Frumin or Parker spoke out about). And even a tiny amount of publicity goes a long way. The whole reason why Graves took got criticized and eventually started to pull back from dropping so many cases is because a anonymous Twitter account with ~1,000 followers (at the time) dug into the numbers and publicized the fact that the USAO was dropping most of their cases. The Council should have a dedicated office looking at this data. Instead, our city has to rely on the charity of one anonymous Twitter user who does this in their free time. Heaven help us if they ever decide to move somewhere else.
