Yes, probably. Mentally healthy people don't shoot 30 people or attack day care workers and masturbate in front of children. Recognizing that people are having mental health issues doesn't mean they should be excused for their crimes. Mental health issues this severe require a swift and severe response.

DP. I thought about the guy in Maine too because it’s sounds like he actually was having some kind of mental health issues - like hearing voices telling him to do things. But I think the reality is if a white man had attacked the day care workers and sexually assaulted 3 yr olds, they’d throw the book at him.

There’s a crazy woman over my the Anacostia Metro that routinely urinates, defecates and pleasures herself in front of the windows at the Thurgood Marshall Academy charter school.
I’ve personally seen her doing it on at least two dozen occasions.

Wouldn’t matter because everyone involved would blow you off. I truly do think SOME police care about crimes like this BUT their hands are tied by the fact that it’s very hard to force people into treatment, plus even if you arrest and take them to jail the perp won’t be prosecuted.
There is only one way to find out if you will be blown off and that is to report. Every time. I cannot imagine that you watched a woman do these things at least 24 separate times, in the window of a school, but didn't report. This is what is wrong with society. Report, every time.

I was recently grabbed and forcibly kissed (I guess? Face mashed with his face.) by a waiter in a diner. Totally out of nowhere, he wasn’t even my waiter so I hadn’t interacted with him.
This was in NYC, but same deal as any other big city.
When I got away and called the police, the officer that took the call actually said that he didn’t think I should ruin the guy’s life and recommended that I leave it alone because the guy might’ve been undocumented and maybe I gave off some signal that I welcomed getting kissed by a total stranger. Because I’ve always been “nice” and a wimp, I dropped it.
It was a very creepy experience and the way the officer dealt with it certainly was enough to get me to shut up.
Hopefully that was a one-off and nobody else has ever tried to report something and been brushed off, but I don’t think so. It’s incredibly difficult to stand up for yourself, especially after a rather traumatic incident, when an authority figure tells you that you’re overreacting.

And even a tiny amount of publicity goes a long way. The whole reason why Graves took got criticized and eventually started to pull back from dropping so many cases is because a anonymous Twitter account with ~1,000 followers (at the time) dug into the numbers and publicized the fact that the USAO was dropping most of their cases. The Council should have a dedicated office looking at this data. Instead, our city has to rely on the charity of one anonymous Twitter user who does this in their free time. Heaven help us if they ever decide to move somewhere else.
I am not pro crime. I just want MPD and USAO to get off their lazy asses and do their f#cking job. Twitter, Reddit, and this thread of full of stories of MPD not arresting this guy and USAO dropping charges left and right.
What does that have to do with the City Council?
I just want to to acknowledge just maybe that MPD and USAO are clearly sandbagging DC. It’s clear to anyone who has ever dealt with MPD to report a crime.

What isn’t registering with you? DC has no control over the USAO or the courts that will try this man. The DC residents nor the City Counsel get a say in this.

These are the same judges that have been reported to be making 4th Amendment evidentiary rulings that are completely out of step with prevailing precedents which is one of the reasons that the USAO cites for its low prosecution rates.
