This is really scary. I work as a case manager with DC Medicaid. School is extremely protective for thousands of DC kids--it gives them food, daily structure (and time away from the chaos at home) and in some cases keeps them away from actual physical harm. I have no idea what the council is thinking. This is going to be devastating to many DC kids whose parents don't or can't have their kids' best interest at heart. I know it's hard to imagine this but many parents make daily and long-term decisions that harm their kids. We saw this in the pandemic--tons of kids who were not schooled at all because there was no-one in the home to login them on, there were many parents who sold the school-owned devices, etc. And this was just the educational neglect (there is physical neglect, abuse, etc).
Truly, I doubt the families you are speaking of are paying attention to Council legislation. And I doubt highly they want to deal with their kids any longer than they have to.
There are a lot of kids of all ages in this city that miss an inordinate amount of school. Their parents either aren’t home so there is no one to make the kid go, or an older kid has to stay home to watch a young sibling or cousin or the parents just don’t care if the kid goes to school. It is common unfortunately in normal times and I fear this legislation will allow some very vulnerable kids to totally fall through the cracks.
