Since most Americans, including Democrats and black Americans, are in favor of voter ID requirements, what is it that those who are pushing against voter ID requirements are angling for?
Free government assistance obtain the ID — or acceptable forms of ID that don’t disproportionately impact any group of people. It doesn’t make sense to me that a student ID with a picture issued by a state university would not be acceptable - when a gun license is just fine. So, older person born at home in a tiny town in, let’s say Alabama. No birth certificate, no Baptismal record, might have a family Bible indicating their birthdate. The onus should not be on this citizen to spend the considerable time and money it would take — if it is even possible— to meet the standards for obtaining a Real ID in, say, Hawaii, in order to fulfill a drummed up solution to a problem that doesn’t appreciably exist. It’s worth pointing out, yet again, that many of the forms of ID deemed acceptable require a birth certificate before they will be issued.
For the circumstances you listed, they'd have to be pushing 100, even in a tiny rural town in Alabama.
First, you’re wrong. Second, even if it’s one person, pushing 100, they should get to vote without interference. I gave one hypothetical example. There are others. If you’re even remotely sincere, arrange to have everyone issued a free official copy of their birth certificate— for starters. And have a backup plan in place for any that cannot be obtained. Voting should be free. So if specific documents are going to be required in order to vote, make obtaining them free as well.
