Exactly. The high income folks hire cleaners, etc. so they can spend non-work hours with their children. Poor working parents can’t do that. I think mentorship by the well off kids is a great idea, although they should be a year or two older. A “big brother/sister” from the same grade might be a bit, ummm, awkward.
not so sure about your statement There are plenty of two-income HH where parents spend time with their kids. I certainly don't hire cleaners. We cook, clean, and care for our kids - and we both work FT. Yes, very poor families struggle. That's a given. But I don't agree that wealthy kids should be mentors for those who struggle. In my experiences, empathy is lacking, and simply assigning a wealthy kid to a poor child isn't a way to develop empathy. Wealthy parents have a cushion that will always act as a barrier - a protective shield that will only allow them to help so much. Poor children are not "projects" for wealthy kids.
Then don’t treat high performing kids as little pieces of resources you can shuffle around to sit a classroom next to low performing kids to inspire them to work hard in school and call it “a diversity initiative.” Low performers aren’t low performers because of a lack of diversity, they are low performers because they don’t work hard in school. It’s as simple as that.
