Older people can easily be tricked into something like that by making them think a family member is in trouble. For example, he could have pounded on the door screaming, “Mom, help!” And she would have run to the door and opened it, thinking she was helping her son. So he grabbed her she’s standing there bleeding in pitch dark (maybe a mouth flashlight in the guys mouth which he’d have to remove to call for her) but not on the flowers and not across the entire porch. He turns back and makes sure he closes the door and walks off with her but the trail stops and there’s no car tire tracks according to the sheriff at the driveway. No screaming is heard. They just poof into the darkness.

I don’t know how there would really be tire tracks.  Driveways in Tucson are all either stone gravel or concrete.  It’s not rainy season so there’s no mud on tires.  I could walk all around my mom’s yard and leave no footprints because it is all rockscape.  
No screaming makes sense to me.  Why scream?  Who would hear you?  Plus many people freeze and don’t scream even when it would be effective.

I think she either was carried out firefighter style in a semi conscious state (perhaps after being hit on the head by a flashlight or similar), or walked out by her own volition after he pulled the gun and said “let’s make this easy….your daughter will pay us a little money and you’ll be home with her by dinner time.”  Hostage takers almost always say something like that to reduce resistance — I don’t want to hurt you, they will pay the money and you’ll be home soon.
