But this is an interesting question nonetheless. All Columbus statues in Italy date from roughly 1900 and forward, a time that coincides with mass Italian immigration. He was not celebrated or a hero before then. I get it that for an immigrant he may be a nice symbol, a source of pride and a way to assert with the discriminating WASPs that they were here first. I also wonder why they chose Columbus vs. Vespucci for whom the country and the continent is named. Italy is a country with such rich history and accomplishment, I hope Italian-Americans are open to the perspectives of others in their community.[/quote]
