When I had my first I focused really hard on trying to find an uncommon name ... a name that was recognizable, that people had heard of, but that wasn't popular right now. I was lucky that my very favorite boys' name is one that was more popular in the 70s and 80s and is less popular now. My DS1 is 3 and I have yet to come across another kid his age with his name. With DS2, we chose a name that is, according to the SSA website, getting more popular, although it has not been cited on this thread yet, making me hope we are" safe." ;) We had already chosen it before I realized it was ascending in popularity and I didn't want to try to find another name since there are so few boys' names I like anyway. This time, I'm starting to think that the only way to avoid the "trailer trash" phenomenon is either to use a name that has never been popular, or to use a "classic" name that is popular but will stand the test of time, and suck up the existence of so many others. The problem with picking a name that has never *before* been popular is that you never know when a celebrity is going to name their child your child's name, or when a TV show is going to use it, or whatever. So really, I think using something classic is the safer route. Also wanted to add that one reason people don't use names from their own/their parents' generation is that people shy away from names of people they know personally. I have friends my age named Violet, Tristan, Amelia, and Henry. These are all names I like and might have considered but it would be too weird to name my child "after" a friend even if that's not what I was doing. There are a couple of names from my generation that I like and would consider, but then I think about how the people I know who have those names might feel weird if I used one of them. Am I the only one who is reluctant to use a name of someone I know?
