I count at least 8 or 9 Sophia's so far (although some may be the same baby, since we DCUM's probably know people in common) but there are also some less expected choices. A few interesting ones so far:
Girls: Frida, Georgia, Liesel, Margaux, Natasha, Nina, Selma, Sylvia and Talia
Boys: Ari, Desmond, Eitan/Eton, Enzo, Jerome, Matteo, Nolan, Otis and Rocco

jeezus--those names are atrocious!
If your DS is Ari, that's the most normal. I'm just not a fan of Ari, but there is nothing really wrong with it. The others are obsurd. As are the girls names. IMHO, of course.
Are they ALL atrocious?? My DS has one of the boy names listed above ... and I love it even if others do think it is atrocious ... but just curious ...
I also like several of the girls' names above.

A few of the girls' names are okay but honestly, yes, all the boys' are cringe worthy.

Yes, all of the boys names are rediculous. Rocco could be fun if you're super Italian, but would suck if your kid ends up on the dorky side. He's destined to be a meathead or juicehead with a name like Rocco. I kind of like Otis, but lots of people hate it.

Anonymous wrote:Also wanted to add that one reason people don't use names from their own/their parents' generation is that people shy away from names of people they know personally. I have friends my age named Violet, Tristan, Amelia, and Henry. These are all names I like and might have considered but it would be too weird to name my child "after" a friend even if that's not what I was doing. There are a couple of names from my generation that I like and would consider, but then I think about how the people I know who have those names might feel weird if I used one of them. Am I the only one who is reluctant to use a name of someone I know?
We had already chosen it before I realized it was ascending in popularity and I didn't want to try to find another name since there are so few boys' names I like anyway.
Anonymous wrote:mommy of a Maya here. never hear of the name before but after DD was born seems like every other girl in the playground is Maya :0(
Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:What's wrong with Cecelia? DD had one in her old preschool class.
Since it's the name of Pam and Jim's baby on the Office, the writers probably picked it because it is probably getting more popular and will get more popular with more people hearing it. We have friends who named their daughter Cecilia a few years ago.

I just don't get why people would name their children such names... Jezebel is another one, or Saul i. e.
I love, love, love the name Delilah, but unfortunately I just can't get past the biblical connotations (and we're not particularly religious).
Not to mention, my moral majority relatives would probably report me for child abuse.
Delilah is on our short list for DD #2 and my mom has been very vocal about how much she hates it because of the biblical reference. We're not religious and I don't even know the story (though I should probably look into it. . .) so don't care that much because I think it's pretty.
We're not too much into Modern History and I'm not very familiar with the story behind the name either so I'll just stick to what sound cute with our last name. DS's name will be Adolf.

Arlington.
Not true. I knew quite a few in Georgetown yet haven't met any in Arlington yet.
I know at least one in Arlington. In 4th grade.
Wow- one! Totally overused named. This is nothing like "Jennifer' in the 80s.
We have five or six friends -- like holiday card/invited to wedding level of closeness -- with sons named jack. it is far and away my nominee for most overused name in my universe.
