It's not a one-time "being saved" as it is for some Protestants. If Catholics die in a state of grace, they will go to heaven. If not, they go to purgatory and if they have people on earth to pray them out or buy them out with indulgences, they'll get to heaven faster than if no one is helping them out here on earth.
